Red-shouldered hawks are medium to large birds with a small head, long tail and wings that stretch up to 3.5 feet across. They have dark brown or blackish plumage on their upper body, chestnut underparts and reddish legs and feet for camouflage in the forest floor where they hunt for invertebrate prey such as beetles, ants nests and grasshoppers.
